Good morning everyone! I'm just a little sleepy after a long night at the Indiana Jones premier. I must say, some people really love their "Indie" and I managed to see at least 3 guys with real whips! Crazy people.
Anyway, the topic of this post is fairly self explanatory but I am looking for some feedback. I'd like to know what blog or website tools or services people are using. It seems that there are countless ones out there and I definitely love the stat machines I'm using, but you can always see what else is in the world right?
Here is my list:
- MyBlogLog
- SiteMeter
- Google Analytics
- Google Adwords
- Google Adsense
- Google Reader
- Technorati
- BlogCatalog
- Entrecard
- Feedburner
Time to join ClickBooth to help monetize your site, don't you think?

Some you didn't mention:
-Stumble Upon
-Google Groups
-Yardbarker Ad Network
-SEO Book's Plugin SEO 4 Firefox
(That's more important for affiliate marketing than for blogging.)
Yeah I should have added Stumble Upon and Yardbarker...whoops :)
I always check out my site at www.websitegrader.com . I see how I am stacking up. I think there are a lot of bloggers that could learn from the report they give you. It is real easy to use and it grades you on a lot of different levels.
That Websitegrader.com is nasty. It pulled my blog apart, and told me i got zero. :(
Oh well.. Still new in the business and still in a steep learning curve.
But i use Adsense, Entrecard and Feedburner.
don't know any of the other tools. Might wanna take a look at them.
Jacob,
You will definitely want to take up Google Analytics and Sitemeter. They give you a ton of useful information.
BAHHHH.. I forgot Analytics..
LOL thats my primary stats site.. check it every 3 hours or so :D
While I do like analytics, I have taken a liking to getclicky.com. It is a new service and it is going to get better and better.
I also agree with all of your other picks!
jacob I think the grader does not like http:// before the URL. I put " www.blogsmarter.dk " down and you got a 79 which is not bad at all.
A ton of bloggers are in the 50-60's.
A lot top out around 80-90.
You have to be trying pretty hard to get in the 90's.
I have been using the grader for a while. My 2 blogs are @ 87 and 95.3.
That does not mean I am the best blogger. It just means I have tried to get better at the stuff they grade.
Alex- Nice, I'll have to check that one out.
Ethan- Also liking that "grader". I think I was in the 80's...I'll have to play with it more to see where some sites sit.
thanks for the web grader tip. Never tried it before.
Cuzoogle got an 85. I have never got an 85 since high school PE.
LOL, I tied Google for website ranking! We both got 88/100. That thing is very stupid in that it involves meta tags. Description tag matters a little, but keyword tags don't matter at all.
I actually didn't know that META tags were still used...
It sure as hell nailed me for that.
Besides what Mr. Blatt thinks, it is a better grading tool than just page rank or just alexa etc...
As for Meta tags, the big websites use them, some search engines use them, and Google might look at them in deep crawls. You never know.
I am not an expert, but when the BIG experts throw them in there, especially on their home page, I do it as well.
I do not listen to the "man" all the time, but my wordpress dashboard lets me do it, so I defnitely do it on important pages and my home page.
At the very least, it does show that you went the extra mile.
This is over all of our heads and maybe should be a really boring post all by itself. :-)
To Meta Tag, or not to Meta Tag?
Concerning META tags, many of the big sites still use them because they left them there from when they were still useful. META description is sometimes used, and the keywords are sometimes used in other engines besides Google. However, if you are in a competitive niche, your competitors can look at your META keywords to get a leg up on you.
And not all big sites use them. I didn't take a long look at grading sites, but I did grade The Rich Jerk's site (and that guy is rich), and he didn't have them on any page.
The Rich Jerk had them on his homepage.
Meta description is a must because it is just as much for humans if not more, than it is for SEO. That is what shows up under your title in search listings. It should be used to grab the searchers attention just as much as the title.
Mitch you are right that competitors can look at your meta keywords, but they would only be getting even (at best) not necessarily a leg up if they are already behind.
On page optimization is a mute point if you don't have strong offpage optimization which is vastly more important than meta tags and description for SEO purposes from what I understand.
Great responses on this META issues. Possibly a post in the making? dun dun dun!
