When we first thought of doing this, we were going to link to some example blogs, but then we decided to just run with it and say pretty much whatever we thought of each type of blog which in turn made us decide to leave out examples.  I guess you'll just have to do some searching!

6.  The Newbie

This sports blogger has no idea what they are doing.  They have no identity, and are not sure exactly how this whole deal works.  They write some linkbaiting pieces, recaps, and link to some blogs, but are struggling through the beginning stages.  We've all been here, and that's why this blog was created!  (Yes that was a cheap plug.)

5.  The Recapper

This is the blogger that probably annoys the sh*t out of me more than any other type of sports blogger.  You see, this is the blogger that thought ESPN, Yahoo, Sports Illustrated and Fox Sports were all doing horrible jobs at bringing you game recaps.  They lack meaningful opinion, interesting topics, and even pull half their posts from the AP which, of course is where everyone else gets their info.  Why does anyone read this garbage?

4.  The Stat Machine

These are the bloggers that are simply way too freakin' talented.  They probably shouldn't be blogging, but should be attending MIT and telling people like me how ignorant I am.  Stat Machines even make the big dog sports sites' stat people feel like morons.  On a side note, if you ever wanted to remember what it was like to be a virgin again, I'm sure these guys could answer some very straight forward questions.

3.  The Entertainer

The Entertainer's entire goal is to be the most creative sports blogger on the planet.  They create new and interesting top 10 lists, poke fun at everyone, run caption contests, call athletes by clever nicknames and simply love every single minute of their blogging life.  I think we all enjoy the creativity of these bloggers, but damn do they make us sick.  Why can't we all come up with this stuff!

2.  The Video Snatcher

A somewhat new breed of sports blogger is the Video Snatcher.  This would be the blogger that spends hours a day looking for that next big video that they can hopefully make viral.  Once found, the video is posted to their blog as if they had created the video themselves!  I guess we all have our vices right?

1.  The Offensive Tool

The blogger with no conscience! They post naked chicks, show private lives of athletes, spread rumors, and have a following as hideous as the Jim Rome Show.  Their life is based on being the most obnoxious toolbox of any sports blogger.  Sure, some things are entertaining, but when the same schtick goes on day after day, the act gets a little old.

And a quick "What up!" to one of our favorite blogs, Epic Carnival, for a list it looks like they did almost a year ago!

nice post kellex. I would like to think I am in the entertainer group but who knows.

sometimes it is just too easy to fall into the recap mode.

  2. kellex // August 28, 2008 8:09 AM

I would put you in the entertainer group Mr. Cuzzy.

  3. ethanator1088 // August 28, 2008 8:28 AM

I would hope I am an Entertainer/ Video Snatcher. I am almost a vlogger.

I try to be funny. People have to like you, or they will never come to the blog no matter what you post.

    Good list Kellex!

  4. Dr. Anklesnap // August 28, 2008 9:01 AM

This is an excellent post Kellex. This is definitely one of the most 'entertaining' reads you've had.

I completely agree on the categories, although there are quite a few of course that blur the lines between a few categories.

And Cuzzy. You are most certainly an entertainer...

  5. Scott // August 28, 2008 9:17 AM

Now what about those that actually capture the footage and create their own videos - ultimately making them viral?

  6. ethanator1088 // August 28, 2008 9:20 AM

Scott that would be the ultimate entertainer! They make the content that is viral. They do AWESOME Work!

  7. kellex // August 28, 2008 9:21 AM

For sure, those people are just ridiculously talented and pimp, like our buddy Ryne.

  8. mookie // August 28, 2008 9:22 AM

Nice work Kellex... just to recap, that was very entertaining and not at all offensive although it could have done with some video with it, just to prove that you're not a complete newbie to this blogging game. Hang on, I'm starting to sound like a tool, so let me get back to reading up on FNBA stats.

  9. Boyd // August 28, 2008 9:24 AM

Lord, I hope to be the entertainer, but am probably the beginner. And as a beginner, check out my blog. lol.

Mookie with the comment of the year. Thank you for that!

  11. And One // August 28, 2008 9:39 AM

Ummm - not sure I fit into any of these categories. What do you call a bball blogger who posts about LEGOs?

  12. kellex // August 28, 2008 9:57 AM

    The best blogger ever!

  13. tecmo // August 28, 2008 10:43 AM

    Good post!

I'd hope to be somewhere between Entertainer and Video Snatcher.

I would say that being a video snatcher isn't really a vice, as some videos are great but have no audience whatsoever. We can make something awesome widely available to people who wouldn't ever have seen it.

    well done

  15. HoopsAvenue // August 28, 2008 10:55 AM

I think I fall into a number of categories from time to time.

  16. kellex // August 28, 2008 10:57 AM

I think we all do, and that's a good thing. Means well-rounded or something :)

  17. World of Isaac // August 28, 2008 2:01 PM

    solid list

  18. nfhell // August 28, 2008 3:54 PM

What about the sports blogger that spends months, years even, writing quality content, building a loyal base of readers, cultivating a following, etc. and then slowly devolves from sports commentary into cult-like ideology in an effort to launch a revolution and take over the universe...

That's my blog. Not really, though.

  19. kellex // August 28, 2008 4:28 PM

That was amazing. Can you do that again?

  20. Docksquad // August 28, 2008 6:43 PM

Great post. I hope to be somewhere between an entertainer and a video snatcher, but I'm probably a newbie still. Keep up the great work.

  21. Marco Pantanella // August 28, 2008 6:59 PM

Wow kellex... I think your nº5 paragraph just completely destroyed my ego. :)

Match reports (on soccer) are actually my specialty, but I do hope I incorporate enough of nº3 into them (i.e. spruce 'em up & make 'em entertaining enough) so that they become *better* than the AP. At least, that's what people are telling me so far. I must have good friends huh?

Anyways, awesome list! I think you covered the essentials there. I definitely know some "entertainers" out there, and like them (and hate them) precisely for the reasons you cited.

  22. kellex // August 28, 2008 10:24 PM

    Hey Marco,

Sorry bout that! But a good recapper is different than what I'm saying there. I'm talking about the guy that just goes straight from the AP and gives little thought of their own.

I know that's not what you are doing. You are doing it up real nice. :)

  23. Ryne Nelson // September 1, 2008 9:34 PM

Love the list...would you say the best sports bloggers are combinations of all of these (so as to not go overboard)?

  24. godof86 // September 3, 2008 4:39 AM

Been a bit of all... alas!

    Great post.
