One of the ideas we acknowledge on a regular basis, is the thought that if you write about hot topics early on or immediately, then Google will reward you and your search rankings will be high enough to bring you some significant traffic.
Certain things like our weekly NFL power rankings tend to get great results if we post them first thing Tuesday morning right after the Monday night game for the week. We may not see the top spot in the actual Google rankings, but we rank very high in the Google blog search rankings.
The same thing happened during our Olympic Google Logo coverage. We tried to be as timely as possible with those logos and sure enough, we managed to be top 3 throughout the Olympics on page 1 of the search rankings.
Continuing to be timely or the first to cover a topic should definitely be one of your goals. Obviously, this is a difficult task to continue to “break” news every day, but if you can manage to do it a couple of times a week, you should be in good shape. Plus, who wants to read 2 day old news? (Yes, I know I was late on the PageRank update. Just this once!)

nice work taking advantage of being on the west coast. Fat chance I am staying up til 1am to see the end of MNF.
This post is definitely true. I don't have the energy to take advantage of it though lol

You are right though, it is nice to have the access to this stuff and not be up until 2AM.
