Watching your ranking climb on anything gives you a pretty damn good feeling, but when it is one of the major website stat tracking machines, it feels even better. Our Alexa rank is due to break the 100,000 mark any day now and it almost brings a little tear to the eye. (A tear? Jesus...)
OK, maybe not a tear, but it makes me realize all the damn work I've put into this blog over the past 8 months or whatever it has been. I've watched our RSS subscribers steadily rise, our Alexa ranking drop under 300K, then 200K, and now almost 100K, our PageRank has gone up during each update and our traffic numbers seem to be rising as well. It feels damn good!
So how did we get to 100K?
- Alexa cares about their ridiculous toolbar. When you install their toolbar and visit a site, you are giving credit to that site and in the long run helping their ranking. This either tells me that I visit my own site so damn much that I've had a tremendous effect or my readers are following suit.
- That nasty little Alexa widget actually helps.
- The Alexa algorithm changed and supposedly has taken some of the weight off of the toolbar. (Woohoo!) But, we are all still wondering exactly what it is they are using in this new method.
- Our traffic has been increasing each month! Yes this helps.
- People told me to use "redirects" with an Alexa address, but that seems wrong and I haven't used this trick and we still are going to hit 100K. (Good for us.)
- We may beat James to the punch! (Also, good for us.)

That's a low blow Kellex. :) Our ranking shot down to 106k, but has gone back up to 122k for no apparent reason...
Both of you need to watch out. I don't know how but my rank has jumped to 100,498. I may beat both of you :-P
Such a low blow! Haha.
Damn Paul, it is a race to 100K!
Congrats. Very cool, I'm gonna have to take this advice for my own blog. I'm gonna add the Alexa toolbar right now. Thanks!
It's a good idea, and you can disguise it pretty well into your toolbar and not even notice it's there.
that is definitely true kellex! i have mine at the bottom of my browser, so I definitely don't notice it there. It blends right in the windows bar at the bottom.
I never stop wondering, why Alexa Rank is that important....
Why is Alexa og even Google that should determine your "succes" as a site?
As i see it Alexa is good for english writen sites, am i correct ?
