The SD has been around long enough that I get a few random emails from time to time offering me or my readers services or products.  Usually, I just delete them as they are either not relevant or are complete spam.  So this week, I got an email from Discount Sports Tickets and they offered me a coupon code that will give you all a 5% discount on their "already discounted tickets."

This is not some affiliate thing and as far as I can tell I'm not making any money off of this, so don't feel weird about clicking on these links and purchasing anything.

They appear to actually have tickets to quite a few games so check it out if you are looking.  After browsing for just a couple of minutes for Blazer tickets, it looks like you can buy some pretty nice seats that season ticket holders must be hawking.

So the 5% coupon code is:  THR374

You are reading that post title correctly!  After almost a year, and thousands of scammed bloggers later, BlogRush realized its product was worthless.  I was one of the many that tried the service, luckily only for a couple of weeks.  I saw absolutely zero traffic or benefits from it and in fact turned out to be a negative seeing as the widget was the most obnoxious looking thing I'd ever seen.

Here is a quick blurb from the email announcing the end:
Last but not least I want to say that I hope the failure of this service doesn't in any way discourage other entrepreneurs from coming up with crazy ideas at 4AM (like I did with this one) and from "going for it" to just try and see if something will work.  Without trying there can be no success.  And as we all know, ideas are worthless without action.  The Web wouldn't be what it is today without entrepreneurs trying all sorts of crazy ideas.
That's right people!  Keep inventing things, and NEVER, EVER follow the BlogRush formula as it sucked.

Last night, I checked into an ad-links service called Triggit that so far I really like. You may have heard of sites like Kontera and Infolinks or at least seen the links pop up on people's sites. Some of the other ad-link sites use double underlined, semi-spammy looking links that hardly blend into your content. There are obvious pluses and minuses to these, but Triggit definitely goes more on the conservative side, which is what I like.

Easy Sign-up and Install

To sign-up, you need about 2 minutes. It's a click, a mini-form filled out, a quick script installed, and finished off with some simple payment information. I'm actually not sure that I've found anything easier to install than this.

What Should you Expect?

Supposedly the service actually reads what you've got on your page and then fully blends its links into your text. In fact, you almost can't tell that the links are installed on your site unless you hover over one and see that it has a "triggit" URL attached. There is no weird pop-up or big bold double underline; it just matches your other links perfectly.

How does it Pay?

Still pending on this one...

It should pay similar to the other ad-link services, but without having used it for more than a few hours, I really have no idea. Hopefully within the next month I can report on earnings and if its blended links really work.

Oh, and the best part? There doesn't seem to be any form of approval, so ANYONE can sign up for it.

The NFL Power Rankings are starting to shape up, well, sort of.  I actually thought I had almost figured the NFL out by week 9 when my pick'em leagues were going as planned for the morning session.  In fact the only game I had wrong was the 1 point I put on Tampa Bay over Dallas, which almost turned out to be a pretty good prediction.  Well then the afternoon came and Pittsburgh blew it against New York, Jacksonville found itself in "Suckville", and 49ers were NOT energized by a new coach.

1. Tennessee Titans
2. New York Giants
3. Pittsburgh Steelers
4. Carolina Panthers
5. New England Patriots*
6. Washington Redskins
7. Buffalo Bills
8. Chicago Bears
9. Dallas Cowboys
10. Philadelphia Eagles
11. Green Bay Packers
12. Arizona Cardinals
13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
14. Atlanta Falcons
15. New Orleans Saints
16. New York Jets
17. Indianapolis Colts
18. Baltimore Ravens
19. Houston Texans
20. Cleveland Browns
21. Jacksonville Jaguars
22. Denver Broncos
23. Miami Dolphins
24. Minnesota Vikings
25. San Diego Chargers
26. Seattle Seahawks
27. San Francisco 49ers
28. Oakland Raiders
29. St. Louis Rams
30. Kansas City Chiefs
31. Detroit Lions
32. Cincinnati Bengals

*Look at those New England Patriots climbing their way up!  I hate them, but there is no denying how well coached they are.  I mean come on, Matt Cassel is their freakin' quarterback and they keep managing to win big games.  We'll see what happens next week at Indy!

For other blog NFL Power Rankings, NE Patriots Draft and My Sports Rumors are 2 of the best.

And don't forget to check out last week's NFL Power Rankings to see which teams made moves!

I know that this is way old news, but for some reason I just never got around to doing it.  Of course, the new draft.blogger.com is all the rave with Blogger users and one of their biggest new options is the setting for an embedded comment form.

Here are the quick steps to setting it up:

1.  Login into your Blogger account and go to Settings>Comments
2.  Select the option for "Embedded below post" and don't forget to click save.
3.  From there go to Layout>Edit HTML
4.  Check the box for "Expand Widget Templates"
5.  Do a search for the following code:

<b:include data='post' name='comments'/>
Immediately after this line, add the following line of code:
<b:include data='post' name='comment-form'/>
Now make sure to save your template and you should be all good!  You now have a much easier and professional looking comment form instead of that random colored, separate page of nastiness that we were all stuck with for so long.

***Quick Note***
If you are unable to find that code, then you may be using some old ass Blogger template that will require a little more work.  Check out this post at Blogger Buster for full details.

A week or so ago, I announced that posting may be sporadic because we had a new venture possibly in the works.  Well, with this post, I'd like to officially announce that we have started a new NBA blog, VH1-esquely titled, Blaze of Love.

The opportunity to start this brought a giant smile to our face as we've deeply been missing covering our all time favorite sport, the NBA.  We also found it extremely exciting to take on the task of covering our favorite team in the Portland Trail Blazers!

In no way should this change the way the SD works or runs going forward.  Blaze of Love was only started with the notion that the SD would not be left behind or neglected in any way.  In fact, we started the BoL because covering one team rather than the entire league is much less time consuming and would leave us just as much time to focus on the SD while showing you the exact steps we take to grow a blog from scratch into, hopefully, a very successful team specific blog.

I guess we'll really be putting our knowledge to the test with this blog!  I'm definitely anxious to see how big this blog can get in one full season.  I'm also hoping to do progress reports here at the SD so you can really see if we know what the hell we are talking about all the time and if we really know how to take a brand new blog and grow into something worthwhile.

Stay with us on this!

And by the way, that fabulous header image was created by our boy GMB who did an amazing job at grasping our initial idea and turning it into something really special.  He is also the man responsible for the new look of one of our favorite blogs, Steady Burn.  Make sure to check out both sites and grab GMB if you ever need anything done to your site!

The Week 9 BCS Standings are out!  No surprises here with the top 3 teams all showing up this weekend and taking care of business.

Penn State didn't put on much of a show offensively, but they sure did take care of Ohio State on the defensive end of things.  I will say that Florida and Texas Tech both looked like "world beaters" while teams like USC struggled to beat middle of the road Pac-10 teams like Arizona.  The final weeks should really make things quite sticky as they always do.  And Oregon creeped back in!  (Not that I really care, but I do live in Portland.)

BCS Standings

1. Texas 8-0
2. Alabama 8-0
3. Penn State 9-0
4. Oklahoma 7-1
5. USC 6-1
6. Georgia 7-1
7. Texas Tech 8-0
8. Florida 6-1
9. Oklahoma State 7-1
10. Utah 8-0
11. Boise State 7-0
12. Ohio State 7-2
13. TCU 8-1
14. Missouri 6-2
15. Florida State 6-1
16. Ball State 8-0
17. Minnesota 7-1
18. Tulsa 7-0
19. LSU 5-2
20. BYU 7-1
21. Michigan State 7-2
22. North Carolina 6-2
23. South Florida 6-2
24. Oregon 6-2
25. UConn 6-2

Many of you appear to have had the same exact thought I had today around 4 PST when we flipped through our cable guide to see if the usual Sunday Night Football game would be starting promptly at 5:15.  And many of you also appear to have been completely surprised to find that there was no game on the schedule!

Google trends shows our proof.

Of course, after using just a couple of seconds worth of brain power, I came to the realization that the World Series is still on, (It is right?)  and that god awful past-time took over our Sunday night grid-iron lovefest!  I'm just hoping that Fox forked out some big time greenbacks to pay off the NFL from dominating the hell out of it with just a regular season game in the ratings.

Since we are very into ranking blogs (Top 50 Sports Blogs!), we thought we should point out another set of rankings that many of you may not know about but may be beneficial to you.

45n5 is a sort-of, make money blog that put together a list of the top 100 make money blogs from around the globe.  The list has actually been around for quite some time and we thought that since we tend to lean towards that niche at times, that maybe we should suggest our site and see where we stack up.  Sure enough, we were added and we are currently sitting at #45 in the world!

Our ranking will continue to change as this blog seems to really want to grow these days.  Our Compete.com numbers continue to amaze me as well as our Alexa ranking which has dropped another 4,000 points in the last week.

You should all head over to 45n5 and take a look at their rankings and possibly find some more "make money" or "internet marketing" blogs that can help your blog really grow.

A friend sent me a link to his site called Review My Web the other day and I actually found it pretty useful.  The site basically offers you free comparison reports between your blog and two others.  All you need to do is fill in your website URL and 2 other competitors of yours followed by your email address and the report is sent to you.  (You can actual do just 1, but might as well do 2.)  The site also lets you do this as many times as you'd like, so keep running it against whatever site you'd like and it'll send you the results in just a few minutes.

I ran it yesterday and really noticed some things I have not been including in the SD that are really hurting my search results.  Not sure what the hell I was thinking in omitting them, but I'm all over it now!

The rumors have been flying around for quite some time now about the possibility of Google Adsense information being available on Analytics with of course, a ton more information.  Well the time has finally come!

Google will roll this out to publishers gradually and hopefully will notify you somehow if you are up next.  Supposedly somewhere in your main Google Adsense page will be a notice or sticky letting you know that you can migrate your Adsense over.

Please pay close attention, and everyone go log in to your Adsense account!  It's like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but for real...or something.  Please let me know if you are able to participate in the early migration as I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

Google's take:

You’ll now have access to granular reports that break down AdSense performance both by page and by referring site. Armed with this new data about user behavior, you’ll be able to make more informed decisions on how to improve the user experience on your site and optimize your AdSense units to increase your revenue potential.
And here is a link with pictures of the new set-up once you've migrated over.  Pretty damn exciting I'd say, even if I hate Adsense.

Big college football fan?  Have a favorite school or coach?  The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award is something you can get involved in for your school of choice and feel good about it.  This award is not your regular Heisman "all about me" type of award, and in fact it's much the opposite.

The winning coach is given $50,000 to donate to a charity of choice and another $20,000 to give to the school's alumni association to help enhance scholarships and other activities.  The Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year is all about communities and how closely college football coaches work within them.

The award recognizes the college football coach in each NCAA division that best demonstrates sportsmanship, integrity, responsibility and excellence. Unlike other coaching awards given out in college football, the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award allows fans to have a say in who wins, and truly focuses on a coach's actions off the field as much as on.

You can head over to the website to vote for your favorite coach once per day, comment to others, grab banners to promote your coach of choice, and see real-time standings on who's leading the charge.

The other day, a buddy introduced me to a newish review service called Snapbomb which actually turned out to be a site worth checking out.  It sort of follows along the lines of other review sites although it works some special magic behind the scenes to decide how much you should be paid for each review.  The site comes off as typical by offering you either an advertising option or a blogging option.

So far, it seems to be non-intrusive and also looks to match you up immediately with offers that appeal to your expertise and interests.  The set up involves a quick script (one similar to Google Analytics) that ranks your site in about 24 hours.  After you've been ranked, you can start writing reviews within minutes.  One thing to note, is that once you've accepted a review, you have to complete it in 12 hours or someting like that.

Now I wouldn't look at Snapbomb as a site to get completely rich off of, but it is a site that will pay you a fair amount for doing up a quick review on a product, service or website.  You can always use some more beer money right?

(And by the way, those aren't affiliate links even though they may look like it.  I'm assuming they are to track the fact that I did this review.)

It's week 8 and we just had another week chalked full of randomness.  Can anyone explain what the hell is going on in the NFL this year?  Kerry Collins is leading a team that is undefeated, the Colts, Chargers, and Cowboys all suck, and the Buffalo Bills actually look to be the real deal.  It has been an impossible season to predict anything except the amount of frustration you will have every Monday morning.  With that said, here are the latest NFL Power Rankings from the Sports Dollar.

1.  Tennessee Titans
2.  Pittsburgh Steelers
3.  New York Giants
4.  Buffalo Bills
5.  Carolina Panthers
6.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers
7.  Atlanta Falcons
8.  Arizona Cardinals
9.  Chicago Bears
10.  Green Bay Packers
11.  New England Patriots
12.  Washington Redskins
13.  Jacksonville Jaguars
14.  Denver Broncos
15.  Philadelphia Eagles
16.  New York Jets
17.  Indianapolis Colts*
18.  Dallas Cowboys
19.  New Orleans Saints
20.  San Diego Chargers
21.  Minnesota Vikings
22.  Baltimore Ravens
23.  Houston Texans
24.  Oakland Raiders
25.  St. Louis Rams
26.  Miami Dolphins
27.  San Francisco 49ers
28.  Cleveland Browns
29.  Kansas City Chiefs
30.  Seattle Seahawks
31.  Cincinnati Bengals
32.  Detroit Lions

*The Indianapolis Colts are the most disappointing team of the season thus far.  The Chargers are giving them a close run for that top spot, but after Peyton Manning's completely ridiculous performance against the Packers this Sunday, it'll be hard to de-throne them anytime soon.  Should it really take almost 3 tries to win in your brand new stadium?

Make sure to check out other NFL Power Rankings around the blog world:

In case many of you have forgotten, we still have a sports blogging job board that is live and as eager to post your jobs as ever!

Well one interesting thing we noticed on it today, was the posting of a Sports Paparazzi position with a company called AAVMedia.com.  Here is a direct link to the posting on a college job board.

It's very interesting and also a little scary to see where sports jobs have grown to over the last 5-10 years.

Sticking to my theme right now of upgrading your Blogger blog, I'd like to point out what I would consider as the top template site out there today.  OurBlogTemplates.com seems to be putting on the highest quality of Blogger templates I've seen since I began blogging.

Obviously these can't compare to a WordPress theme, but they are starting to come pretty close with Google and Blogger making a ton of advancements to the service.  And now with template sites like OurBloggerTemplates.com, you are really able to create a pretty damn solid and professional looking blog without forking out more than a few dollars.

I know that many of you are WordPress pros, but I also know that many of you continue to choose the free route for blogging by going with Blogger.  If that is the case, and you haven't taken my advice to purchase your own domain, then this is another reminder followed by a quick tip to set it up.

Your own domain will give you instant credibility especially since other bloggers and advertisers highly frown upon those nasty little blogspot addresses.  In fact, I know of at least 4 affiliate companies that will deny you immediately if you do not have a custom domain which is putting a considerably small ceiling on your earnings potential.  So go get a damn domain and then follow this tip to set it up in just a few minutes!

Here are the steps for an easy setup!

Once you have purchased your custom domain, you should start first with the Blogger side of things.

Blogger set-up instructions:

1.  Login to your Blogger account and go to "Settings"
2.  From there choose "Publishing" and click on "Custom Domain"
3.  Then click on "Switch to Advanced Settings"
4.  In the empty box provided you will then type your preferred URL such as "www.thesportsdollar.com" or "thesportsdollar.com"
5.  After clicking "Save" you will have another option appear via checkbox that will give you the chance to forward either your "www" URL or your URL without "www" to your preferred domain.  Check this box and save again.

Your Blogger account is now set up and we can head over to your domain settings to finish it up.  I use GoDaddy.com for all of my domains so these steps work specifically for it, but should work with any other domain seller.

GoDaddy set-up instructions:

1.  Login to your account and click on "My Domains".
2.  From there select the domain you would like to edit and then choose "Total DNS Control and MX Records"
3.  Once your screen changes, you'll need to add 3 "@" records and update your "www" record as follows.

  • First @:  Host name:  @  Points to IP Address:  64.233.179.121  TTL:  1 Hour
  • Second @:  Host name:  @  Points to IP Address:  66.249.81.121  TTL:  1 Hour
  • Third @:  Host name:  @  Points to IP Address:  72.14.207.121  TTL:  1 Hour
  • www:  Alias name:  www   Host name:  ghs.google.com
4.  Once you've edited those 4 records, give your blog about 30 minutes to an hour and it should be rolling straight to your new custom domain.

Pretty damn simple?  So like I've said a thousand times now, go get a damn custom domain and get rid of that nasty old blogspot address!

Let me know if you have any quetsions on those diretions!

It's been a slow week at the SD and that's because we have a new project in the works that is taking up some of our extra time.  We'll hopefully be able to announce it to you all in the next week once it's gone live.  For now, just bear with us through this slow patch!  Posting may be more sporadic than ever over the next few days, but everything will be fine.

10/15/08

So my feed was finally switched over to Google’s new feed server the other day which now allows me to run Google Adsense in my feeds.  (Woohoo?)  Initially, I was a little frustrated and wrote up this quick post on the process, which didn’t come off all that hot.  Well once I let Google actually continue to work out the bugs on that first day after receiving notification, it actually ended up going through pretty flawlessly.   With it all complete, here are my thoughts on the service.

1.  Why not do it?  I tend to steer away from placing many Adsense ads on my blog because in my opinion, they look a little sloppy and get zero action on my type of blog.  But through a feed, they are directed specifically at the bottom or top of any post and appeal just to that specific post.  Right now I don’t have another way to run ads through my feed, so this way just makes sense, plus it’s not intrusive at all.

2.  Keep track of your feed stats.  There are other ways to keep track of impressions on your feed, but this now makes it even easier.  I can now tell each day if 20, 30 or 80 people are actually reading posts through my feed and seeing these ads.  It’ll make for some interesting testing going forward that will hopefully help me decide which types of Adsense ads should be used.

3.  A minor irritation.  You have to update all of the feed links on your site to your new google feedproxy feed.  This doesn’t take much time, and Google gives you a direct link to your new Feedburner page which directs you to your link information.  So not a huge deal, but it is definitely something that will need your attention.

4.  Easy customization.  Like any other Adsense ad, you can customize the colors and all that jazz.  There is also an option to let Google match up to your settings which I’ve done for now, so once again, not rocket science here.

Those are my initial thoughts, and for now I plan on running these ads at least as a stat tracker if nothing else.  Have any of you switched over yet?  If so, let me know what you think!

Another week of upsets and another complete overhaul to our NFL Power Rankings!  You'll notice a huge drop this week for the Redskins as I was write by ranking them 15th a couple of weeks ago even though you all told me how great they were.  Well, you can't be great and lose to the Rams people, so they've officially been dropped the hell back down the list.

1.  Tennessee Titans
2.  Pittsburgh Steelers
3.  New York Giants
4.  Indianapolis Colts
5.  Buffalo Bills
6.  New Orleans Saints
7.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8.  Carolina Panthers
9.  Arizona Cardinals*
10.  Jacksonville Jaguars
11.  San Diego Chargers
12.  Atlanta Falcons
13.  Dallas Cowboys
14.  New York Jets
15.  Philadephia Eagles
16.  Green Bay Packers
17.  Denver Broncos
18.  Washington Redskins
19.  Chicago Bears
20.  New England Patriots
21.  Minnesota Vikings
22.  Miami Dolphins
23.  Baltimore Ravens
24.  San Francisco 49ers
25.  Houston Texans
26.  Seattle Seahawks
27.  Kansas City Chiefs
28.  Oakland Raiders
29.  St. Lous Rams
30.  Cleveland Browns
31.  Cincinnati Bengals
32.  Detroit Lions

*How about them Cardinals?  Boldin gets jacked up, Warner almost retires, and then they destroy the Bills and Cowboys.  I can't believe that I actually put them into my top 10 as I'm sure that won't last long, but it feels good to live on the edge for a minute.

If you don't agree that this is the most annoying ridiculous NFL season ever, then you must be a hockey fan.  What else can possibly NOT go as planned and cost me hundreds of dollars each week?  How many times can my top pick in a football pool lose to the worst team in the NFL?

Here are some reasons to better illustrate my frustrations...

Reason 1.  Jon Kitna knew that week 6 would be a good week to take off.

Why?  Well not only was it a Sunday and he's about as religious as that whack-job VP hopeful from Alaska, but he must have had a vision from God that his back-up would do something absolutely absurd.

Reason 2.  Tom Brady draftees, I'm laughing at you.

Yes I had him last year during the record breaking season, and yes you drafted him this year with hopes of a repeat performance, but those high hopes were shattered in what, 5 minutes?

Reason 3.  My readers have no idea who's good in the NFL.

Just 2 weeks ago I put the Redskins waaaaaaaaaay back at #15 on my list and got torn apart by all of you!  So what happens?  Oh, I just watched them take down the Eagles in week 5, receive some love from my week 6 rankings and follow that up with a loss to possibly the worst team in NFL history behind last year's Dolphins.

Reason 4.  Hello injuries!

Name one starting receiver for the Seahawks.  Can't?  That's what I thought.

Reason 5.  A guy actually thought he could play with TWO torn knee ligaments.

Yeah, remember Barry Bonds' roid-in-law Shawne Merriman?  He thought his HGH and hat size enlargers could take him through an LCL and PCL tear?  And I thought the NFL had the best testing policy of any major sport?

Reason 6.  Cincinnati starts 0-6!

OK, nevermind.  We knew this would happen.

Reason 7.  Brett Favre is still the best.

At the young age of 39, Brett Favre changed teams and got better.  Wait, what?  I thought there was supposed to be some sort of steep learning curve that would keep him from having any success in his supposed final season?  The most touchdowns and the best passer rating in the game should have squashed that idea!

Reason 8.  We have a new Sean Alexander.

This may be a little premature, but what the hell happened to LT?  Just 2 years removed from breaking Alexander's record for TD's in a season and he's sitting 13th in the league in rushing through 6 weeks?  When names like Julius Jones, Chris Johnson, and Earnest Graham are in front of you, you know your career is about to be over with.

Reason 9.  Cowboys get rolled in AZ, and I picked it.

That's right, I picked that damn upset and actually got it right!  Of course, then the Redskins, Bears, and Dolphins all choked within the last minute and life began to suck again.  I'll give anyone $50 right now if they can find me a person that picked every game right for even 1 week this season.

Reason 10.  Did Kurt Warner almost retire mid-season?

He sure did!  Because of this hit on teammate Anquan Boldin.  I can't say that I blame the guy for thinking about walking out of the league without severe brain damage, but please Kurt, don't leave your teammates with Matt Leinart.  Stay strong brah!

Reason 11.  OJ Simpson on trial again!

Yessir he is!  Well, this time he's actually going to jail for a while.  His Lawyer even had the audacity to say that the jury had an agenda.  I don't think anyone is going to argue against that point, idiot.

Reason 12.  Dancing With the Stars tears up your calves.

Jason Taylor who had a much publicized cat fight with Bill Parcells during his "Dancing" bid, was traded to the Redskins late in the off-season.  It looks like the "Tuna" was right again!  Those high heels sure can cause random and mysterious calf injuries!

Reason 13.  Al Davis is old and f-ing crazy.

I know, I know, this is not a surprise, but his press conference to fire Lane Kiffin sure as hell was.  If you missed it, hopefully you Tivo'd that damn thing or you can check out this Youtube of it.

Reason 14.  We had 2 name changes that left our heads shaking.

Pacman went back to Adam and Chad went officially to Ocho Cinco.  For lack of a better internet term, WTF?  Well, Adam tried to attack his own bodyguard the other day and Ocho Cinco is third on his team in receptions.  Wise name choices?

Reason 15.  Detroit finally did it.

They fired Sir Matt Millen.

Google launched another one of its logos today with the celebration of Paddington Bear's 50th birthday.  The mesage displayed over the image happily says, "Happy 50th Birthday Paddington Bear!"

Of course this means nothing to me as Paddington was not a major influence on my childhood.

But don't forget that we try to keep track of Google's logos as they come out.  Here are the Google Olympic Logos, the first day of fall logo and the Large Hadron Collider Logo that we so graciously tracked.

spwidgets is a new site offering free sports stats widgets for your website or blog to help spruce things up.  The nice thing is how easy it is to use!

They are currently offering MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL widgets with multiple options for each league.  When you click on a sport's logo, you immediately get 2 drop-down menus.

1st Menu:  This menu allows you to pick from 4 options:  standings, schedule, scores, and odds.  From there, the second drop-down will change depending on the option you just picked.

2nd Menu:  This menu allows you to break certain categories down by specific conference or even division.  This is nice if you have a Green Bay Packers blog and you only want to show the NFC North division standings on your website.

Once you've chosen your 2-3 options, you are taken to a page that allows you to really customize your widget.  In the customize page, you can change the font, width, and colors of your widget which is a very nice touch. I think we all struggle with some widgets that don't match up to our color scheme. Well these guys realized that frustration, and took care of it.

Here is an example of a quick widget we threw together:

And remember, these are FREE!  So run over to spwidgets and add some spice to your site.

So I finally received my email from Google stating that my Feedburner account had been migrated over to Google so that I can include Adsense ads in my feed now.  At first I was excited, and then I started noticing issues.

1.  My chicklet now looks different and is displaying 11 less subscribers than yesterday.  (That sucks.)
2.  My feed is also not updating.  (I'm subscribed to my own feed and the post I did on "bounce rate" is not showing yet)
3.  I can't see if ads are on there yet because I'm at work, and our network has EVERYTHING blocked.
4.  No idea when any of this will be straightened out.

**If any of you can see ads coming through in your feed or have updated feeds please let me know!

For now, here is an alternate or new feed URL that has up to date info:  http://feedproxy.google.com/TheSportsDollar

Of course, you shouldn't have to subscribe to that, as the migration was supposed to work and transfer you all over.  Let's just hope by the end of the weekend it has magically fixed itself!

One of those nasty little stats Google Analytics help track for you is the bounce rate of your site.  You should be checking yours regularly to see that your blog is becoming sticky enough to have people actually hang around for a while on your site.

What is a bounce rate?

A bounce rate is essentially the percentage of people that land on a page of your site and then leave immediately after reading it.  Not a good thing to have a high bounce rate, folks!  The goal is to have an extremely low bounce rate which in turn means people are reading more than one article or viewing more than one page every time they land on your site.

A quick tip to lower that bounce rate!

Link to your other pages constantly!  You'll notice that in almost all of our posts, we try to link to another relevant topic or post we had made in the past.  Our favorite spot?  Right at the bottom of the post!  If you end with that relevant link at the bottom of your post, your chances are fairly high at getting the reader to continue on.  Of course, your original article has to be interesting enough to get them that far.

The other day someone pointed out to me that a few newer sports blogs were using "nofollow" links when they were running their daily link lists.  To tell you the truth, it irritated the hell out of me.  What's the point of that?  Are you really that worried about your PageRank that you've decided to give zero link love to your friends and fellow sports bloggers?  If there is one way to completely tarnish your image, keep using those "nofollow" tags.  Tools.

Link lists are a Good thing

The basic idea of a link list is to shell out links to your friends or nice posts that you really enjoyed and thought your readers would also enjoy.  These lists are also a great way to let other sports blogs know that you exist. (Obviously as long as your links are "dofollow".)

And how can you tell?

Firefox has this nifty little add-on that will highlight anyone's "nofollow" tags in pink!  The add-on is called Search Status and does more than just highlight "nofollow" links so it's definitely worth installing on your browser.

I'm not necessarily telling you to run around now and check to see if all of the blogs you read are holding back the love from you, but I am telling you to at least check it out and decide which blogs you should really be getting close to.

Woohoo!!!  After just 7 months, Google has hit us with our own "sitelinks" or whatever people are calling them these days.  Are you wondering what the hell I'm talking about?

Go to Google and run a search for "sports dollar" or "the sports dollar" and you'll see our site listed now with mini "sitelinks" underneath.

Check this out:

This is Google's way of saying, "Hey, you are here to stay, so let's give you an actual identity and make you look more legit when people search for you!"

It's my understanding that this usually takes about a year before they dish these out, so we are more than happy to receive them now.  And in fact, I haven't checked in a while, so we may have had them sooner!

Last week I got destroyed by readers for my week 5 power rankings and rightfully so.  I was still struggling to get a feel for where teams stacked up against each other and I would say that this week it became pretty damn clear.  So here's to you Washington Redskins fans!

1.  New York Giants
2.  Dallas Cowboys
3.  Tennessee Titans
4.  Washington Redskins*
5.  Pittsburgh Steelers
6.  Carolina Panthers
7.  Indianapolis Colts
8.  Jacksonville Jaguars
9.  New England Patriots
10.  Chicago Bears
11.  Buffalo Bills
12.  Denver Broncos
13.  New Orleans Saints
14.  Tampa Bay Buccaneers
15.  San Diego Chargers
16.  Philadelphia Eagles
17.  Green Bay Packers
18.  Arizona Cardinals
19.  Atlanta Falcons
20.  New York Jets
21.  Miami Dolphins
22.  Baltimore Ravens
23.  San Francisco 49ers
24.  Cleveland Browns

27.  Houston Texans

29.  Kansas City Chiefs
30.  Cincinnati Bengals

*Sometimes your readers jump all over your ass and tell you how wrong you are.  And sometimes they are definitely right.  The Washington Redskins are the real deal, but I still needed just one more week before I believed in them.  Well that week has come and gone and it's time I give it up to them!  But seriously Moss, you've been my top receiver, so what the hell happened this week?

Make sure to also check out other sports blog NFL power rankings at sites like NE Patriots Draft.

Seen the "Don't Vote" campaign/video/meme/thing-a-ma-jigg?  Make sure you register to vote.  Whatever your political preferences may be, this election year marks a pretty damn important time in all our lives.

The video will tell you to send this video to 5 people in hopes of making the thing "viral" so that a ton of damn people will register.  Well bloggers are using it to link to 5 other blogs as a way to let 5 people know that they should be voting.  Here is my 5:

1.  NE Patriots Draft
2.  Blue Workhorse
3.  My Sports Rumors
4.  Busted Coverage

Another weekend is upon us!

I hope everyone had a chance to watch Governor Palin's attempt at dodgeball last night.  Have you ever seen someone dodge so many direct shots in such a short amount of time before?  Of course while dodging, she did manage to throw out random pre-rehearsed generic jabs and choppy small town lingo.  Dog gonn-it, what a hoot!  Did anyone know that Alaskans speak with southern accents?  News to me too!

See you all on Monday!

Daniel over at Daily Blog Tips is getting ready to roll out Blogging Idol 2!  I’m actually thinking of joining in on the second season as season one was such a huge success.  Right now they are looking for sponsors and I’m just guessing here, but they will probably have a pretty elite list of prizes for Idol 2.

What is Blogging Idol?  It was basically a competition to see who could grab the most RSS subscriptions over a few week period.  The results people received were amazing, which is why I’m thinking of jumping in this season.

You all should join with me!  We could have a little side contest between the sports bloggers involved?  We’ll see what happens in the next few weeks.  Stay tuned!

By the way, you should probably be reading Daily Blog Tips on a pretty regular basis.  Daniel seriously does know what he’s doing and always provides a ton of useful information that you can use to continue to improve your blog.

This morning, I was looking back through old posts to see if there were old topics that needed updates and I realized we had done 313 posts!  I can’t believe it has been that many and that this blog has been up for so long.  It seriously seems like yesterday that this idea came to fruition and the SD was born.

Anyway, while looking back through old posts, we noticed a handful of posts talking about products and services that we suggested people should check out.  Sure enough, more than a few of these I would call complete flops or on the verge of becoming flops.  Some of these services preached big things and slowly fizzled and died off.

TNX.net

Remember this one?  I think this was some paid review we did and while doing the review realized how intrusive the service was.  They basically wanted you to completely manipulate your template code in order to get their whacky service up and running.  It may have changed now, and possibly became easier to use but we still don’t feel good about it.  Plus, Google hates these text-link-widget-selling site things.

BlogRush

Was this thing the scam of the year or what?  The BlogRush widget was everywhere!  Every blog on the planet bit on their idea to send you relevant traffic without having to do extra work and all that.  Of course, no one saw anything from it except the revenues of BlogRush growing exponentially.

Top Hosting Center

We thought about using them to host us and even gave their affiliate program a shot, and then a close friend of ours actually moved over to them for hosting and things went immediately downhill.  A front page digg submission followed by and Extra Mustard hit and their site blew up on the first day!  Or better said, the Top Hosting Center server blew the hell up.  Another small company talking way too much game.

BlogRolled

Remember this one?  This was the site created by the ReviewME folks which was going to be a link buying exchange sort of program.  Instead of installing some nasty widget that Google would hate on, they claimed they would sell text links for you and then it was your responsibility to actually place them on your site.  Seemed great, and then no one had any links sold.  Flop.

Entrecard

We used it and so did you!  Has anything been a bigger waste of bloggers’ time than this site?  I would argue, “hell no.”  The site is about to completely crash in the next month or 2 after the owner flip flopped on a possible sale only to regain his motivation for making it great.  Yeah, failure is around the corner.

Performancing Ads

Ok, so not a complete flop but it is inching close to it.  Initially, it started off well with so much buzz being generated from top blogs on the service around the blogworld.  Well, like all things, the buzz died off and now, no one cares about the site.  I think I sold 2 ads total through it and purchased a few more?  I’ve basically gone back to selling ads on my own, which works a hell of a lot better.

Any services you can recall that are/were complete flops?  I know we’ve touched on quite a few of them!
