Go Get Snag-it Now!

Sunday, November 30, 2008

Posted 12/1/08

My favorite blogging tool is easily SnagIt from TechSmith.  Heard of it?  It's not free but I'm sure many of you are smart enough to find a free version somewhere out there in the interwebs.

Uses:

You can quickly grab screenies of any size or shape and even cap videos which I've been doing a lot more of lately.  It also has a pretty nice editor that you can use to add captions or highlights to your images with.

My favorite usage?  You when you go to some random site that has a picture you REALLY want but they've protected it?  Problem solved with SnagIt!

Quick Tip: Calculate your Earnings - CPM Calculator

Posted 11/25/08

Many of you are running YardBarker or Sportsviews ads these days and are probably struggling to figure out how much money you'll be making at the end of each month.  YardBarker does a pretty good job at keeping track of how much money you have coming your way but with Sportsviews, unless you know how CPMs are calculated, you probably have no idea how much money is in limbo.

A site called Clickz has a great CPM calculator for you to use.

To figure out your earnings:

  • Login to your Sparklit account.
  • Hit the "plus" next to statistics and then click on the name of your blog so that it is highlighted.
  • You should then see your views for the week pop up.
  • Change the "preset range" to "This Month" and click view.  It should now be displaying your total views from all banners for the month.
  • Take that total of views, plug it into Click's CPM Calculator in the impressions box and in the CPM box plug in whatever CPM rate they are giving you.
  • Click "Solve".
There are your earnings for the month!

This tool can also be used to figure out what you should be charging potential advertisers or even to work out a possible fixed rate with YardBarker instead of using those variable half sold 50 cent ads.

I was contacted the other day from the owner of a very reputable fantasy football site that has be put up for sale.  Corey, the owner at Fantasy Football Goat has decided that it is time to move on and has written a post describing his reasoning

The interesting thing for fantasy junkies to look at with this site, is Corey's offer to let you test drive it to see if running this site is something you would want to do.  So any of you fantasy football crazies out there should really look into this site.  It has been up for 2 years now and has a ton of content and history to work with.

Here are some stats for you to consider:

Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year - Team Dynamics

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Posted 11/20/08

Twice now, we've reminded you that the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award is still up for grabs and needs your vote!  If you have yet to cast your vote, maybe it's time to think about what a coach means to his players in terms of on and off field team dynamics?  Oh, and you only have 15 days left!

When I think of a coach that fulfills this award, it would be a coach like Chris Petersen of Boise State.  Not being a Boise State graduate or fan, this may sound a little odd, but stick with me.

Chris Petersen continues each year to work in a non-BCS program and each year continues to make a strong case for his team to play in a BCS Bowl game and possibly a National Championship.  Now how does he do this?  Through an inferior program at an inferior school, you must preach discipline and team dynamics in order to win.  The players you are able to recruit are no where near the caliber of schools like Florida or Texas, yet Boise State, through Petersen's leadership always finds a way to compete.

His players truly love him as a person and while playing for him, love each other.  The dynamic created between players on and off the field is unmatched and a delight to see.  Just a few reasons why I voted and maybe even a couple of guidelines to help you make yours.

Here are the Fan Vote Leaders as of November 14:

[1]-Paul Johnson-Georgia Institute of Technology

[2]-Mark Richt-University of Georgia

[3]-Nick Saban-University of Alabama

[4]-Bronco Mendenhall-Brigham Young University

[5]-Joe Paterno-Pennsylvania State University

[6]-Mark Dantonio-Michigan State University

[7]-Pat Fitzgerald-Northwestern University

[8]-Randy Shannon-University of Miami (Florida)

[9]-Les Miles-Louisiana State University

[10]-Bob Stoops-University of Oklahoma

[11]-Skip Holtz-East Carolina University

[12]-Brady Hoke-Ball State University

[13]-Jim Tressel-Ohio State University

[14]-David Cutcliffe-Duke University

[15]-Urban Meyer-University of Florida

[16]-Kyle Whittingham-University of Utah

[17]-Mack Brown-University of Texas at Austin

[18]-Houston Nutt-University of Mississippi

[19]-Tommy Tuberville-Auburn University

[20]-Rich Brooks-University of Kentucky

[21]-Mike Leach-Texas Tech University

[22]-Butch Davis-University of North Carolina

[23]-Chris Petersen-Boise State University

[24]-Tim Brewster-University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

[25]-Mike Gundy-Oklahoma State University

If Sports Blogs were Chicks...

Monday, November 17, 2008

Posted 11/18/08

An advanced warning should probably be dealt to those involved in this post.  By no means do we think your blog is in any way an actual chick; take this as sort of a compliment, well some of you.  In fact, that last statement made absolutely no sense so we might as well start calling you all out for your femininity immediately.

If your sports blog was a chick it would be...

Erin Andrews  (Awful Announcing and Fire Joe Morgan)

Is this the ultimate compliment for a sports blog?  Probably not for these two seeing as they look for the absurdity and awfulness that is sportscasting and we all know that Erin Andrews is no Bob Costas (assuming you think Bobbie is good).  In this case though, we just want to credit their coverage of announcing/sportscasting with a beauty that is in their specific field that we've all drooled over a time or two.

Kendra Wilkinson  (Shutdown Corner and ProFootballTalk.com)

Thank Hank Baskett for this one boys!  Plus, we're pretty sure she's slept with the entire San Diego Chargers squad and constantly looks hot wearing NFL jerseys.  An easy pick for the top 2 football blogs.

Megan Fox (Cuzoogle)

Cuzzy, simple because I know how much you love her and how you went out of your way to find me the clip of her on Two and Half Men.  To help this choice though, she is fun...I think.

Jessica Simpson  (NESW Sports and You Been Blinded)

This is such a cheap shot and I do need to preface this one with somewhat of an apology.  I love you guys, but this goes out to your video posting and Moondog's post on how "any idiot can post a video."  Love you boys!

Sue Bird  (Ball Don't Lie and SLAM)

Hey, for a basketball player, she's hot OK.

Basically because I never really know what the hell is going on at your sites.  The crazy side of Britney was unpredictable and that's exactly what we all love about you.  Plus, at some point in time, you were extremely hot, and to many (including us), still are.

Pam Anderson (With Leather and Busted Coverage)

Because you love giant moo moos yet don't mind looking a little dirty at times.  We continue to look at you and grin deep inside as to not completely let everyone know we'd still hit it stare at it.

Scarlett Johansson  (The Big Lead and SPORTSbyBROOKS)

You're voluptuous yet simple, and we all just can't get enough of you.  You give us everything we could ask for as long as it's in a red dress or jersey.

Blake Lively  (The Sports Dollar)

Just because we always make our lists.  Oh, and she's young, hot and on her way to the top, which of course we would hope of ourselves.

Sarah Palin  (Kuklas Korner and James Mirtle)

Isn't this one pretty self explanatory?  At least you guys don't get booed every place you go!

Kim Kardashian  (World of Isaac)

Because I swear that every time I go to your site, there is her behind, which I thank you for.

Vanessa Minnillo  (SI's Hot Clicks)

For being a personal favorite.

Your thoughts?  What kind of chick is your sports blog?

Week 12 NFL Power Rankings - Sports Dollar's Weekly

Posted 11/18/08

Time for your week 12 NFL Power Rankings!  The top 4 teams all came away with huge wins this week and all were somewhat tested.  Well, the Giants looked like world beaters while the Titans came back and put the hurt to a pretty physical Jacksonville team.  Pittsburgh sort of snuck through, while Carolina turned up the heat in the second quarter to destroy Detroit.  And how about those Cardinals?

1. Tennessee Titans
2. New York Giants
3. Carolina Panthers
4. Pittsburgh Steelers
5. Arizona Cardinals
6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
7. New York Jets*
8. Indianapolis Colts
9. Miami Dolphins
10. New England Patriots
11. Dallas Cowboys
12. Denver Broncos
13. Atlanta Falcons
14. Baltimore Ravens
15. Washington Redskins
16. Philadelphia Eagles
17. Green Bay Packers
18. Chicago Bears
19. Buffalo Bills
20. Minnesota Vikings
21. New Orleans Saints
22. San Diego Chargers
23. Jacksonville Jaguars
24. Cleveland Browns
25. San Francisco 49ers
26. Houston Texans
27. Seattle Seahawks
28. Oakland Raiders
29. Kansas City Chiefs
30. St. Louis Rams
31. Cincinnati Bengals
32. Detroit Lions

*The J-E-T-S JETS grab the asterisk this week.  Is Brett Favre possibly up for another MVP?  He easily would have won the award last year had Brady not decided to be a record killer, but this year he is almost as impressive.  Are the Jets really the cream of the crop in the AFC East?  Who would have thought...

Doc's Sports does Power Rankings?

Posted 11/17/08

You may have noticed one of our new sponsors is Doc's Sports who should be your number 1 source for sports information.  One of the main reasons we partnered with them was because of the excellent sets of power rankings they put out so frequently.

What do they offer for rankings?

As you are all aware, the NFL season is in full swing and Doc's Sports' NFL Power Rankings are top notch.  In fact, I tend to look to them when I put out my own sets of rankings each week.  When you are looking at match-ups for the week, you should definitely gives theirs a look.

Doc's Sports should also be your source for College Football Power Rankings.  Their Ferringo 15 has a success rate of 59.4 percent this season which is pretty remarkable for college football, and is most likely higher now after the weekend's games.

And our personal favorite would have to be their NBA power rankings especially since they are giving our Portland Trail Blazers plenty of love.  These come out every other week and although new, are sure to become some of the most respected NBA rankings in the near future.

Expect to see a lot more from Doc's Sports and the new partnership we've formed with them!

Johnny Depp as an Athlete? Michael Phelps?

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Posted 11/13/08

We were asked the question from our buddy Mike of Steady Burn, "WHICH ATHLETE'S BIOPIC WOULD YOU LIKE JOHNNY DEPP TO STAR IN?" and it was actually pretty tough to think of one.  The guy is basically the most un-athletic looking person on the planet and the thought of him throwing a baseball or shooting a 3 just makes us breakdown into laughter.  So with "ball" sports out of the way, what's left?  Swimming!

That's right, we decided he could play Michael "Teeth" Phelps.  I know, I know, this sounds completely ridiculous and makes no sense at first, but think about it.
  • Both are completely goofy looking, yet still get a ton of love from some of the finest ladies on the planet.  (Although, that snaggle toothed thing Depp runs around with these days is super icky.)
  • Both also have an incredible track record of success, although I would argue that Johnny Depp's movies all suck.  (Yes, I'm aware that I'm in the minority here.  OK Blow and and Fear and Loathing were good.)
  • Both are overhyped by the media and have waaaaaaay been overplayed in either commercials or movies and frankly, I'm damn sick of 'em.
  • Neither would you ever want to hang out with in public.  Phelps' lisp would be unbearable especially with a couple of cocktails in him while Depp's wardrobe would be so embarrassing, you'd be coming up with excuses all night as to who the "Don Juan" look-a-like was.
So basically that's it!  Just hope and pray that this movie is never, EVER, made.

***Update - The reason behind this post in case you were wondering.

Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year is still Going!

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Posted 11/12/08

Remember just a few weeks ago when we told you about the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award ?  Well it's still going!  You actually have 23 days left to get those votes in and decide who the coach of the year really is.

Before you make those votes though, you should understand that coaches not only influence kids on the field but the winner of this award should also provide a major influence on them in the classroom and drive the thought of excellence into their lives.  When voting, think about a coach that places just as much importance on winning as he does on academics.

This award also recognizes the college football coach that demonstrates excellent sportsmanship, integrity and responsibility.  Like we said before, the winner gets $50,000 to donate to charitable organizations and $20,000 to donate to his school's alumni association which is a pretty significant amount of money.  As of last year, $300,000 has been donated to charity and another $100,000 to alumni associations.

Get out and vote !

So if he thought dressing up as Tyrone was good, what else is up the sleeves of Superman?  Only time will tell...

Week 11 NFL Power Rankings - Sports Dollar's Weekly

Posted 11/11/08

Dying to see the SD’s week 11 NFL Power Rankings?  Is this the first week to almost have gone as planned?  Favorites are starting to finally break through victoriously and we are also now realizing how sh*tty some of the teams are that most of us were expecting to be world beaters.  I would say that the top 13 teams on our list we feel pretty confident in unless of course they are playing each other and then that method all goes to shambles.

1. Tennessee Titans
2. New York Giants
3. Carolina Panthers
4. Pittsburgh Steelers
5. New England Patriots
6. Baltimore Ravens*
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
8. Indianapolis Colts
9. Washington Redskins
10. Arizona Cardinals
11. New York Jets
12. Atlanta Falcons
13. Philadelphia Eagles
14. Miami Dolphins
15. Chicago Bears
16. Buffalo Bills
17. Minnesota Vikings
18. Denver Broncos
19. Dallas Cowboys
20. San Diego Chargers
21. Jacksonville Jaguars
22. Green Bay Packers
23. New Orleans Saints
24. Cleveland Browns
25. Houston Texans
26. Seattle Seahawks
27. San Francisco 49ers
28. St. Louis Rams
29. Oakland Raiders
30. Kansas City Chiefs
31. Cincinnati Bengals
32. Detroit Lions

*The Baltimore freakin’ Ravens people!  That defense looks mighty tasty these days and the young pup Flacco is really starting find that second gear.  The running game is on point with McGahee while Ray Lewis is back to killing destroying manhandling dominating opponents and ripping hearts from their soft little chest-icles.  Look out NFL, it just feels dirty again.

Our Alexa Ranking just keeps Climbing!

Posted 11/10/08

Watching your ranking climb on anything gives you a pretty damn good feeling, but when it is one of the major website stat tracking machines, it feels even better.  Our Alexa rank is due to break the 100,000 mark any day now and it almost brings a little tear to the eye.  (A tear?  Jesus...)

OK, maybe not a tear, but it makes me realize all the damn work I've put into this blog over the past 8 months or whatever it has been.  I've watched our RSS subscribers steadily rise, our Alexa ranking drop under 300K, then 200K, and now almost 100K, our PageRank has gone up during each update and our traffic numbers seem to be rising as well.  It feels damn good!

So how did we get to 100K?
  • Alexa cares about their ridiculous toolbar.  When you install their toolbar and visit a site, you are giving credit to that site and in the long run helping their ranking.  This either tells me that I visit my own site so damn much that I've had a tremendous effect or my readers are following suit.
  • That nasty little Alexa widget actually helps.
  • The Alexa algorithm changed and supposedly has taken some of the weight off of the toolbar.  (Woohoo!)  But, we are all still wondering exactly what it is they are using in this new method.
  • Our traffic has been increasing each month!  Yes this helps.
  • People told me to use "redirects" with an Alexa address, but that seems wrong and I haven't used this trick and we still are going to hit 100K.  (Good for us.)
  • We may beat James to the punch!  (Also, good for us.)

They may be based out the UK, but BlogStorm continues to be my favorite SEO/Marketing blog.  Patrick, although sporadic at posting sometimes, really gives you some straight info on growing the hell out of the traffic to your blog.  His tips are always relevant, up-to-date and thought provoking.  Make sure you add them to your reader.

The major point on this post though, is the their job board.  If you are overseas or possibly looking for a major career change, you should take a look at this.  They are constantly adding jobs to it and are mostly SEO influenced but always worth a look.
