The Entrecard team has finally figured out a way (or decided) to sell credits to their users. Excited? I can't say that I am seeing as I can earn credits for free by clicking the "Drop" button on people's sites. You may respond with "Time is money", but when I was actively dropping, I could easily drop 300 cards in less than 30 minutes.

One thing I noticed the other day while approving some ads was that Entrecard had attempted to eliminate the "fast" dropping tactic from their Campaign section which was most likely a lead up to this new purchasing system. (I was still able to "fast" drop through my Drops Inbox though.)

So how does this new system work?

Buy Credits

On your Entrecard dashboard you will now see a link to buy credits. From this link, you are directed to a screen with 3 purchasing options: 1000 credits for $9.50, 5000 credits for $47.50, and 10000 credits for $95.00. The catch? They are only selling a limited number of credits per day to keep their "economy" stable.

And to think, I gave away 12,000 credits for free? I could have bought a new pair of shoes!

Earn Credits

Entrecard is also now, allowing you to earn credits just by posting to your blog. They pull your feed automatically and will deposit 25 credits into your account every time their feed picks up a new post from you. The catch? This will only happen once every 3 days, so don't think you can spam out posts to earn thousands of credits you cheap asses!

Write for the Entrecard Blog

They are also willing to pay you (in credits) if you write up posts for the Entrecard blog. You can make up to 2000 credits if your post is accepted and the amount you get is completely subjective to how good they think your post is.

It sounds like this Entrecard thing is still going strong, but I'm still not going to be a big participant. They have to really do something in the near future to wow me or that widget may be coming off as well.

Time to join ClickBooth to help monetize your site, don't you think?

"Tiiiiiiiime is on my side, yes it is!" That's right folks! The 7500+ Farewell to Entrecard - Credit Giveway is over and we have all the time in the world to work on other traffic building methods!

We had amazing participation and have realized how many of you really love this damn Entrecard thing and also that you will do whatever it takes to grab a big sum of credits. I hope the spending of these massive amounts of credits goes towards something useful, like an ad on The Sports Dollar or Le Basketbawl. (Hah)

Thank you to everyone who participated in our biggest contest ever. I'm glad we could share our wealth of Entrecard experience and bank of credits with you, but we are so damn happy to be moving on. With that said, let's get to it!

The participation was great enough that we ended up with right around 11,000 credits to dispurse. That is a pretty significant amount if you ask me.

The winners...of the first and last 7500+ Farewell to Entrecard - Credit Giveway are...

Thanks again to everyone who participated! We will not be removing the Entrecard widget, so feel free to continue to purchase ads as we will keep accepting them. You have seen the last of us for a while dropping cards, but you never know, if the service changes for the better, we could be back!

I wanted to give everyone an update to our more than fabulous Farewell to Entrecard – Credit Giveaway! We are sitting at a whoppin’ 8700 credits right now and should easily hit that 10,000 credit mark by the end of the week. (Assuming that I hold up my part of the bargain and drop 300 per day until the end, we’ll obviously be right there.)

But why not shoot for more!? Since we’ll definitely get to the 10,000 number, why don’t we aim for 12,000? The more people that participate in the contest, drop their cards on us, and continue to share the word will only make this goal even more attainable. What do you all think? Is 12,000
Entrecard credits possible? I think so!

Right now the prize payout will look like this:

-1st Place – 7500 Entrecard Credits
-2nd Place – 2000 Entrecard Credits
-3rd Place – 500 Entrecard Credits

If you guys work together and can get this number up to 12,000 we’ll have a ton more to give away to 2nd and 3rd. Let’s see how big we can make this thing people! I’d like to see the prize latter look more like this:

-1st Place – 8000 Entrecard Credits
-2nd Place – 3000 Entrecard Credits
-3rd Place – 1000 Entrecard Credits

Wouldn’t that be amazing?

What? Farewell?

It's time for a change! It's a new month, the sun is starting to shine, and I am ending my Entrecard participation! This blog has been up for just over a month now and I've been dropping cards like crazy, day in and day out without receiving much in return.

At one point we had 208 cards dropped on us and things were actually looking pretty good for Entrecard. Well, then they decided to change their ad pricing system and there seems to have been a huge falling off for participation. The Sports section has essentially died as well as the Make Money Online group.

I can easily drag in 100-150 people a day to the site just to drop, but I'm finding the work put in to reach that number is not really worth it. I will continue to drop for 2 more weeks and that's it. I've also purchased our last few ads just to see what may happen and once those have run their course I will stop that activity as well.

What about your credits?

I'd like to give them all away to you! Right now I am sitting at 5000+ credits with 8 ads purchased from us left to run. (That total will obviously go up after the ads are finished running.) I will also try to drop 300 cards everday for the next few weeks just to give it an extra boost. You could easily walk away with 7500+ credits to use to purchase either a ton of ads or maybe even a few big ones!

So how do we win this MOUND of credits Mr. Kellex?

A winner will be decided on May 16th using The Sports Dollar's Super Fancy Lottery System. (I should trademark that biz!)

And how the hell do we enter into this lottery?

The game is easy and you can do any or all of the following to better your chances. You will receive the amount of virtual tickets listed as you complete each task.

  • 150 Tickets: Write a short post or blurb about this contest with a minimum of 100 words. Make sure to link back to this post and also state the 7500+ credits somewhere.
  • 100 Tickets: Post our 125x125 banner linking back to us somewhere on your blog for the duration of the contest. You can combine this into your short blurb on the contest to kill two birds with one whoppin' stone. (Here is the link to it)
  • 50 Tickets: Subscribe to our RSS feed. (Sorry long-termies, but you have to be a new subscriber.)

That's it people! Pretty simple stuff and you could be entered into this within minutes really. Make sure to drop me a comment once you have completed any of the requests so that I know it has been done. (And by the way, when you leave a comment, make sure you have a blog attached to it so I know who the hell you are.)

If you can think of other ways you would like to help promote the contest, please let me know and it may be worth additional tickets.

I will be keeping track of all the tickets up until the last day when we will decide the winner! Thanks for playing!

***UPDATE***UPDATE***

MORE PRIZES!!

We have had a great initial reaction to the contest in just the first couple of days and the totals have been skyrocketing! A suggestion was made to give out consolation prizes and you know what, I think that is a fantastic idea.

Our initial goal was to hit 7500 credits and give those all away, but from the looks of it we could easily hit 10,000! If we hit 10,000 credits by May 16th, then we'll have enough to give out a second and a third place prize! (Prizes will be determined toward the end of the contest.)

So keep spreading the word! The more participation we get, the more credits and chances you'll have of winning!

Sir Obnoxious...err John Chow decided to join the rest of the blog world by running an Entrecard Credit giveaway/contest. Basically just by posting about his contest your are entered. (Wow original huh?)

An excerpt from his post:

For the past few months, I’ve been letting my Entrecard credits build up. Currently, I have 18,817 EC credits sitting in my account. I’ve decided to give away 10,000 credits to a lucky blogger so he or she can try out the service.

Entering the contest is extremely simple. Just send a trackback by making a blog post about this contest on your blog. If the trackback doesn’t work, then leave the URL to your blog post in the comment. At the end of this month, I’ll draw a name from all the entries received and transfer 10,000 Entrecard credits into that person’s account.

OK, so I've done my part which has entered me into the contest. I'm not exactly sure what I would do with 10,000 credits seeing as I have about 5,000 in my account right now. Maybe we should run another contest to give some away?

I went through 2 Entrecard advertising campaigns and saw varied results. I tried the "purchase on the big dogs" approach and also the "ad-whore buy everything" approach and neither saw much success. I'm not really into purchasing anymore but more into building my popularity to see where that can take me. (Yes, I'm sure I'll give up on Entrecard someday, but there has got to be some good use to it right?)

Well, if we win, we'll most likely figure out a way to give them back away to one of you! Could be a prize worth 15,000 credits?

This is the second in a two part segment from someone I would consider an "Entrecard expert." Stan from the fantasy baseball site Razzball has been on top of Entrecard ever since I can remember. He's an amazing guy and shared with us this piece on how you can get to the "popular" page on Entrecard and stay there for good. In case you have seen this before, he also posted this as an Entrecard blog. It's incredible. If you missed part one or the "Razzball" Guide to Entrecard Pt. 1, please read that portion first.

3. “This all seems pretty doable.”

Well, it is, but we’re not done yet. Next step, pick a side in an Entrecard forum debate and argue it. That’s not to say, belittle other members and threaten to Google bomb them. Agree or disagree, and state your opinion. If you’re wrong, concede to the other side. After you’ve participated in a few threads, start a sticky thread of your own. Make sure it’s in the right forum. (Entrecard Forum or Community Forum only. Promotions Forum is a mess and don’t bother at all with the Introductions Forum, it’s a waste of space.)

Your forum thread should never be about your posts or your blog. People can find your blog if they want. If you think you can grab people’s attention with your blog, then starting a forum thread shouldn’t be that hard.

A good first thread usually is, “Is my Entrecard image good? Do you think it can be better?” People will gladly chime in and they will also be seeing your card and thinking about it. This is very good. Also, if your card’s lame, there’s some great Entrecard members that can help you with it and this will help you forge a possible friendship.

(Tip: Another thread that works well is one along these lines, “Reciprocating Drops…. Why is it that I drop on so many people and they never drop on me back?” This says two things, “You drop a lot of cards and if someone drops on you, you know what’s up and you will reciprocate a drop.” Caveat: You absolutely must reciprocate drops after saying something like this. This will annoy people if you’ve said something like that and don’t actually reciprocate.)

4. “Am I going to advertise anywhere?”

Actually, you’re going to advertise everywhere. Take $20 and buy yourself 2000 credits. With those two thousand credits, advertise on the Popular and “Top Three” sites you’ve been hitting every day. Put an ad on every site that is available.

If you’ve struck up a friendship of some sort in one of the forums, advertise on their site. If you want, advertise on some Most Recent sites. Go into your category and advertise with some sites that are now below you. Advertise with sites that are right in front of you. Advertise absolutely everywhere.

Take another $5 and advertise on Project Wonderful Entrecard sites. (When looking for sites in Project Wonderful, search the tag, “Entrecard.”) Blanket Entrecard with your image. Make it impossible for people to be unaware of you.

(Tip: Advertise on other people you notice moving up the ranks. They’re trying to do the same thing as you so their price is going to go up. Get it while it’s low. Secondly, they’re dropping a lot if they’re moving up, so your card will be seen by more people because of their activity. Caveat: Don’t be annoyed when someone rejects you. Turn into a positive. Message them and say it’s no big deal that they rejected you. Their site is probably out of your niche anyway. If you don’t want to message them, at least drop a card on them. Life’s too short to hold grudges.)

5. “I’m almost to the Popular Page and for the first time in my life I feel alive!”

That’s great, but you’re not there yet. You’re about to put everything you learned to the test. When you first reach the top of your category and feel like you’re about to swell over into the Most Popular page, stop dropping 200 cards in the morning. Simply open your Drop Inbox and hit everyone that has dropped on you so far in the day, that should take you to about 50 to 75 cards already.

Now check your Inbox once every hour or two and hit the sites that are dropping on you. This shows them that you are on top of reciprocating. Now around the half way point of the day, start dropping cards on sites that you know usually drop on you, but haven’t yet. This will stimulate activity to your site.

Finally, the Promotions Forum. Go in and start a thread that says, “Ten Credits to drop on me.” This usually gets people dropping on you just to drop and they say keep the credits. If they want the credits, send them along. Finally, towards the end of the day and you’re just about to reach the Most Popular page, start a forum thread in the Community Forum with the title, “I Can’t Believe I’m on the Most Popular Page…” Then inside the thread, you thank me.

First, you’re welcome. Now that you’re at the Most Popular page, immediately you ask yourself, “Do I really wanna stay here if it’s going to involve so much work?”

This reminds me of my uncle who is on dialysis. He says everything can go to turd as long as he maintains the torso. Once you are on the Most Popular Page, all you have to do is “maintain the torso.” You advertise here and there and reciprocate every drop. As long as you reciprocate every drop, you should “maintain the torso” of your advertising price. You no longer have to seek people out, because now they seek you out.

Stop making friends? Not unless you’re a xenophobe. When someone new comes along, welcome them. If they want to drop on you – great. Just make sure to drop on them, because you know firsthand the work they’re putting in. Before you know it, they’ll be sitting between you and Joan Joyce on the Most Popular page.

A giant thanks to Stan again! Please stop by his site, Razzball for all your fantasy baseball needs. Hell, just stop by to say "Hi" to the guy; he has a ton of knowledge that I'm sure he would love to share.

This is the first in a 2 part segment from someone I would consider an "Entrecard expert." Stan from the fantasy baseball site Razzball, has been on top of Entrecard ever since I can remember. He's an amazing guy and shared with us this piece on how you can get to the "popular" page on Entrecard and stay there for good. In case you have seen this before, he also posted this as an Entrecard blog. It's incredible.

How to get on the Popular Page.

I wrestled with whether or not to share these secrets, because, frankly, it will probably do me more harm than good for everyone to know. It’s the golden goose. Bilbao’s magic ring. The secret. But then I think about how great it’s been to be on the Most Popular page and I couldn’t help but share. I’ve forged friendships (Cecilia, Deimos, Bendz), had an Entrecard member help me switch from Blogspot to a self-hosted site (Turnip) and dozens of other perks too numerous to mention.

Since I joined Entrecard on 12/26, I’ve spent a majority of my time on the popular page. Does this make me an expert? Yup. Is there any set course to get onto the popular page? Nope. However, the following five directives will do the trick in a mere two weeks.

1. “What do I do with my 300 drops?”

Good question, that’s a great place to start. Drop two hundred cards as soon as you can in your day. But not 200 random sites. The worst mistake you can make it “card surfing.” This is haphazard and won’t get you anywhere. When you “card surf” you’re not dropping on necessarily people who reciprocate, you’re simply dropping on some people who have advertised. Also, by dropping on the same exact sites, there’s a good chance you will get backlinks when their “Top Dropper” lists come out at the beginning of every month.

Go to the Most Popular Page and drop on every site there, then move to the category page and hit every “Top Three” site that you’ve missed. If you need whys, I’ll explain. The Popular Page and the top three in each category are the best collection of sites that are active on Entrecard. These are people that will, more than likely, reciprocate your drops. This is the key. Every directive will be making sure you get drops back. Your drops are only used to get drops back or to reciprocate.

If you wanna tip someone, just send them some credits. They’re about a cent a piece. You do the math. Are you following? Great. Now at the latest possible moment in your day (before Entrecard ends its day at 12am EST), drop on everyone that has dropped on you that you haven’t already dropped on. At first this might not be that many, so you should have cards leftover. With the leftover cards, go into some of the categories you’re interested in and drop on the first three sites after the top three. Then take twenty cards and drop on the last few people to post in a forum thread. Take another twenty cards and blanket your category. Once you start moving up your category, you’ll need more of your cards to reciprocate, but by that time you should have a pretty good handle on who reciprocates, so only drop on those.

Do not drop on Most Recent sites. Nine times out of ten they don’t understand what a their inbox is or how to drop a card. By the time they figure it out, you’ll be on the Most Popular page and they’ll be dropping on you.

(Tip: Many people on Entrecard are also on BlogCatalog using the same 125×125 image. So when you come to a site that shows the last five or so people from BlogCatalog, check to see how long ago they were they were dropping. If it was recently, go to their site and drop on them. They are probably doing the rounds, as well. Caveat: Don’t join any bookmarking cliques/lists. If you do this organically, you’ll be better off. Full disclosure: I recently joined a drop 50/day list and I regret it. Probably by the time this is posted, I’ll be out of that. Why I regret it will be for another day.)

2. “Dropping and running? That’s lame. I wanna help the community.”

Well, aren’t you the giver? Okay, next step: sincerely comment on some blogs. If you have nothing to say, that’s a shame and you probably shouldn’t be writing a blog. Some sites will be completely out of your comfort zone. Here’s an idea, don’t comment on those blogs. i.e. Sometimes I see a site where they’re talking about computer “stuff” and I haven’t the foggiest idea what’s being discussed. You know what I do there? Don’t comment. Seriously, don’t pester people with lame comments. Sincere comments on blogs; that’s it.

How many comments a day? There’s no set limit, whatever you feel comfortable doing. You should be able to muster fifteen comments a day.

(Tip: Spread your comments around. There’s no reason you can’t comment again and again on the same blogs, but you should try and spread your net wider. Caveat: Don’t comment and run. Follow-up on old comments to show your gratitude that the blogger commented back to you. You’re building your Entre-foundation. Please try and walk before you run.)

Part 2 will run later this week. Stay tuned!

Before reading this, you may want to take a look at the Entrecard Experiement Pt. 1!

The results from our little experiment are in! I'm not sure how positive or astounding they are, but they definitely show you some trends and bring up some interesting thoughts. Like is Entrecard really worth the hassle?

We forked out quite a few credits for some of these just before the pricing adjustment was made and some paid off, while others completely flopped. Many of these blogs' advertising price was running strictly off of reputation or obsessive dropping. Now those aren't necessarily bad things, but they factored into our experiment during the purchasing process.

The major goal with this experiment was to determine if forking out credits for the big dogs was really worth it. Did we get new readers or see a spike in traffic on the days that we were advertising on these blogs? Here are the results.

Ben Barden dot com: 114 clicks
The Blog Entrepreneur: 84 clicks
Sports Business Digest: 83 clicks
TSB Magazine: 58 clicks
ProBlogger: 39 clicks
EpiBlogger: 29 clicks
Stephan Miller: 26 clicks
Le Basketbawl: 25 clicks
The Blue Workhorse: 22 clicks
John Chow dot com: 21 clicks
Chris Guthrie: 16 clicks

Interesting enough? You'll probably notice some blogs missing from our initial list and that was because they registered less than 16 clicks to our site. (The Social Millionaire, Tyler Cruz, and Mr. Javo)

As you can see, Ben Barden's site definitely was the big winner here! Very disappointed in the John Chow and ProBlogger results. I really expected a couple of hundred clicks from these sites and they turned out to be flops compared to the credits we forked out for that ad spot.

One thing to keep in mind, is we were using our ugly old 125x125 card that probably had people laughing at it rather than wanting to click it. This was also during a time when Entrecard was making a ton of changes to their advertising pricing as well as some other site adjustments. There was downtime and some confusion which would have all played a role in the weak results.

One high point was seeing our basketball blog come up in the list and beating out John Chow! We didn't expect it to do much but maybe that has to do with it being a sports site? Another factor was obviously the title of our site that is seen on Entrecard. Being called "The Sports Dollar" could discourage many "money making" bloggers as most are not necessarily the biggest sports fans. When they hear "sports" I'm sure most cringe and go back to crunching numbers on there TI-83.

While advertising on the big dogs, we also did not see a jump in drops to our blog. We were hoping with the added traffic, that our drops would jump and our ranking in the "Internet Marketing" niche would climb. That was not the case although, we did work some of our own Entrecard tricks to get into the top 4 there. (Maybe a future post?)

On a side note, we did purchase an ad on John Cow dot com and during our time, his site was hacked/crashed or whatever you want to call it and it killed out chance to see results.

Overall, this process did not work out as planned. With the amount of traffic some of these sites see on a daily basis, we figured the clicks from John Chow or ProBlogger would have been significant. We were obviously wrong!

With the new pricing adjustment made by Entrecard, you may want to be careful purchasing ads on these big dog sites. The pricing is much higher now than it was when we were buying. Make sure you are actually getting a return for the big time credits you will be forking out.

Right now we are testing out the "ad purchasing whore" technique and we'll see what it does. Building up our brand is the most important goal right now and this could be a great way to start.

Let us know if you have any questions or need more details on the experiment!

The Entrecard Credits just seem to be building up in our account these days and we are not in "ad purchasing mode" so rather than let them go to waste, we thought we'd give some away to our readers!

Here is how the deal works!

  1. Add the Sports Dollar as Technorati favorite: 10 credits
  2. Subscribe to our RSS feed: 20 credits
  3. Link to us from your blog: 40 credits
  4. Review the Sports Dollar: 150 credits

This wannabe contest will run for one week and at the end of the week (Next Sunday, 4/13) we will be distributing credits to all particpants. This is a no lose situation here people. Jump right in!

Make sure to let us know which and how many of the steps you have completed via comment! (You may want to post links if you have done a review or a linkback.)

Also check out the Entrecard Experiment we are running to see which ads are actually worth spending those hard-earned credits on.

Entrecard seems to have taken the blog world by storm hasn’t it? Do you feel like you know what the benefit of it is? I sure as hell don’t.

The Sports Dollar is fairly new and from the beginning has been logged onto Entrecard. I’ve taken the time and dropped cards like crazy raising The Sports Dollar up into the top 5 of the sports blogs listed on the site. It did not take a ton of work but it did seem to take on a life of its own after a while. Almost every day I found myself trying to drop more and more cards hoping for a return in order to raise my blog’s advertising rate. Sure enough, it actually worked. (I posted an Entrecard tip you should check out.)

I figured that once my blog had entered into the top 5 of any list it had a chance to drive some extra traffic to my blog as viewers would see it at first glance when entering a site category. That was not really the case I came to find out. It has seen steady traffic, but that is solely due to the fact that I dropped hundreds of cards a day and other bloggers returned the favor.

With my first idea sort of failing, I decided to take on another experiment. What would happen if you purchased Entrecard ad space on the big time blogs such as
John Chow, ProBlogger, or even John Cow?

The experiment is set and we’ll see the results within 2 weeks. So far I have purchased space on a few of the big dogs and we’ll see what kind of traffic they can generate for us. Isn’t the true idea of Entrecard to act as a free ad network rather than a drop machine?

Here is the schedule we have set so far:

Blog Entrepeneur: Ad running 4/5

Mom’s Cash blog: Ad running 4/5
ProBlogger: Ad running 4/6
Sports Business Digest: Ad running 4/8
The Social Millionaire: Ad running 4/9
Stephan Miller: Ad running 4/9
Chris Guthrie: Ad running 4/10
Epiblogger: Ad running 4/10
Ben Barden: Ad running 4/11
Adtoll: Ad running 4/11
Mr. Javo: Ad running 4/12
John Cow: Ad running 4/13

Tyler Cruz: Ad running 4/14

(Obviously not all of these are considered 'Big Dogs' but they do all see decent traffic to their sites so we thought we'd give it a shot.)

I’ll be working to get more of the big dogs taken care of, such as John Chow. These spots are obviously in high demand but I’ll keep you updated as I sneak in a purchase here or there.

On a side note, try to keep your other ad purchases to a minimum. If you are not buying space on a big time blog you will not see any traffic. You may be getting your little card out there, but unless the blog is relevant to yours, the EC’s may not be worth it.

I think we're all into this Entrecard thing and not really sure where it is going to take us right? We click and click and drop and drop and never really see much. It may get you some traffic, but is it really the kind of traffic anyone wants? Talk about screwing up your Google Analytics with an average pageview time of 2 seconds?

Either way, we are still obsessed at this point and think that raising the number of credits to advertise on our blog is going to mean something special! Maybe some day.

Until then, here is a quick tip to help you dominate Entrecard and not waste hours a day trying to build up your credits and stats.

First off, you need Mozilla Firefox to do this. IE7 could be considered the worst program on the face of the Earth.

The main trick here is to use Firefox's tab'd browsing with shortcuts to whip through the Entrecarding process. Start with a category that has 40-50 blogs in it total like 'Books.' Begin at the top with the first blog and right click "Open in new tab." Do this for the first 2 rows which should give you 11 total tabs open including your main Entrecard tab.

Now make sure you start with your second tab and it's time to fly through these!

Use CTRL+TAB to go from tab to tab and click on the link Entrecard provides you to their blog. Once all of the tabs load the individuals sites you use CTRL+TAB again to tab through each blog while dropping. Once you have dropped your card you can hit CTRL+W to close the tab to clear up space!

Your Entrecard List:

1. Open a small campaign
2. Right click and "Open in new tab" the first 2 rows of the campaign
3. CTRL+ TAB through each to click on the link to the blog's site
4. CTRL+TAB through again while dropping your cards
